This folio of eight etchings was initiated at the behest of a dealer who suggested an “adult” children’s book. At that time Avery had just discovered a list of over 200 titles of tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. He immediately saw this as an opportunity not to illustrate the Brothers Grimm, but to use their work as a point of departure from which the artist's imagination could spin its own tales.
