Herlinde Spahr

In her book Open Studio: Work from 1977 to 1997 Herlinde Spahr notes: "The medium of lithography is dust, the petrified dust of a time when the first birds were taking flight into the sky… In a world of shifting values, changing perspectives, refracting visions, what greater teacher than this silent substance, hard and stubborn as stone and yet so exquisitely sensitive that it can record a breath of air."

A native of Antwerp, Belgium, Spahr moved to California in 1977. While enrolled at UC Berkeley as a student in Comparative Literature, Spahr turned to printmaking due to a chance discovery of a lithographic press and stones at the ASUC Studio on campus. Her work has evolved from traditional editions on paper to large lithographic collages on paper and Formica.

“Technical finesse, an open attitude to the creative process, and deeply personal subject matter are typical of the works of Herlinde Spahr.”
