Jakob Demus (1959- )
Austria

Demus received his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1984. His work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Rembrandt Huis Museum in 2005 and a catalogue raisonne has been published by the Hercules Segers Foundation.

Jakob Demus is the only contemporary graphic artist to specialize in using the diamond-drypoint technique. Like drypoint, this technique is used predominantly to add extra accents to etchings. The only other artist known to have created whole pictures by incising them in the copper plate with a sharp-Bed diamond is the German Lovis Corinth.

However, Demus is the first person to use this technique in a systematic way. As is the case with drypoint, the design is drawn directly on to the plate without any chemical process.
