Laura Hernández was born in the city of Oaxaca in 1960, and the imagery of her art reflects the rich tradition of Oaxaca. Her artistic training began in Mexico City, where she moved at the age of five. She now splits her time between Oaxaca and a studio in the Netherlands.
Her work is a fusion of myths and cosmogonies; of legends and realities. The duality in her painting emphasizes the importance of the union of opposites, masculine and feminine, associated with Ying and Yang. The union of opposing principles in her work is a metaphor of the fullness of being. The mix of modern Mexican aesthetic is equal parts pre-Columbian iconography mixed with indigenous folk art.
Several years ago she created a large scale exhibition of her work which traveled to museums in Germany, France, Mexico and the United States.
