Miyo Stevens-Gandara - prints and biography
Miyo Stevens-Gandara
Miyo Stevens is a multidisciplinary artist and educator whose practice spans photography, textiles, printmaking, painting, and drawing. She received her MFA in Photography from the California Institute of the Arts and her BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Currently, she teaches courses in analog and digital photography, Photoshop, and photo history, while maintaining a studio practice that moves fluidly between traditional and experimental media.
In 2014, Stevens was one of only four artists selected nationally to participate in the Self Help Graphics Printmaking Ambassador Program in Cuba. Working at the renowned Taller Experimental de Gráfica in Havana, she created a woodcut titled FATUM—Latin for “destiny” and “fate.” This experience reflects her ongoing interest in cross-cultural exchange and the intersections of art, history, and identity.
In 2015, Stevens was among seven artists invited to contribute to the Printmaking Survey of the Los Angeles River, producing a portfolio of seven 11 × 15-inch fine art prints through Self Help Graphics’ L.A. River Atelier. Her contributions ranged from woodcuts and linocuts to digital prints, demonstrating both technical versatility and conceptual depth.
Through her teaching and artistic practice, Miyo Stevens continues to engage with the evolving role of printmaking and photography in contemporary art, exploring themes of destiny, cultural narrative, and transformation.
