Origin Beginning series
The Origin-Beginning series by Seiko Tachibana consists of seven intaglio prints developed in connection with an artist book project completed in 2007. Using softly layered circular forms, subtle tonal shifts, and expansive negative space, the works explore moments of emergence and early structure rather than fixed systems. Seen together, the series unfolds as a sequence of quiet variations, emphasizing balance, rhythm, and the gradual formation of visual relationships.

In Origin-Beginning-2, Tachibana introduces a more pronounced dialogue between light and dark. Rounded forms cluster along the lower edge, while lighter, bead-like elements trace gentle paths through the upper field. The composition feels rhythmic and measured, balancing areas of visual weight with expansive open space.

Origin-Beginning-7 feels restrained and contemplative, with softly layered forms dispersed across the surface. The composition emphasizes tonal subtlety over contrast, allowing the eye to move slowly between faint connections and isolated shapes. Within the series, this work suggests a moment of pause or equilibrium.

Origin-Beginning-3 emphasizes vertical movement within the series. Darker forms gather toward the lower portion of the composition, while lighter shapes rise upward in delicate chains. This upward flow gives the work a sense of lift and transition, as if forms are emerging from a denser ground into open space.

In Origin-Beginning-5, the composition shifts toward greater density and contrast. Dark, rounded forms accumulate along the lower edge, creating a strong visual foundation, while lighter elements drift above. The tension between grounded mass and airy movement gives the work a quietly dramatic presence within the series.

Origin-Beginning-1 introduces the series with a sense of quiet emergence. Pale blue and translucent ochre forms drift across the surface, punctuated by darker circular shapes that anchor the composition. The marks feel suspended rather than fixed, suggesting an early stage of formation where structure is only beginning to coalesce. The work sets the tone for the series’ exploration of growth, balance, and open spatial relationships.
