Francisco Zúñiga’s El Niño y la Vela (“The Child and the Candle”) is among his most intimate and lyrical lithographs — a tender study of light, innocence, and maternal reflection. A mother, rendered in soft chiaroscuro tones, gazes downward as a child reaches toward the glow of a single candle. The work embodies Zúñiga’s lifelong devotion to the human figure and the quiet dignity of everyday life in Mexico and Central America.

Executed in warm sepia and ochre hues, this lithograph demonstrates Zúñiga’s exceptional command of tone and texture. The candlelight becomes both literal and symbolic — illuminating the tenderness of the scene while emphasizing the sculptural presence of the figures. The work’s gentle realism, combined with its subtle spiritual overtones, makes it one of the artist’s most evocative prints from the late 1970s.

This impression is signed, dated, and numbered in pencil, with the Kyron blindstamp at the lower right, confirming its printing at the renowned Kyron Workshop in Mexico City and publication by Brewster Editions in New York. The sheet retains full margins and is in excellent condition, showing only minor paper loss on the reverse from previous hinging, invisible from the front and without effect on image or stability.
