Sean Caulfield
Biography
Sean Caulfield is a Canadian printmaker, draftsman, installation artist, and creator of artist's books whose work has been exhibited extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. Born in Rhode Island and based in Edmonton, Alberta, he is currently Professor of Art and Design at the University of Alberta, where he previously served as Canada Research Chair in Fine Arts (Tier 2) and Centennial Professor. In 2017, he was elected to the Arts Division of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his contributions to contemporary art and research.
Caulfield's work explores the complex relationships between technology, the environment, and the human body. Drawing upon science, literature, mythology, and history, he creates images that blur the boundaries between the biological and the mechanical, the organic and the constructed. His prints, drawings, sculptures, and installations frequently combine references to industrial landscapes, scientific illustration, medieval narratives, and contemporary culture, resulting in evocative works that are at once poetic, unsettling, and deeply relevant to contemporary life.
